The general meaning of the term cosmetics is, substances used to enhance or protect the appearance of the human body. For example, creams, lotions, lipsticks, hair colors, bath oils, and many other types of cosmetic products.
Since the ancient days, the need for cosmetic products is seen. Earlier, these products were used both for curative and beauty purposes. Some of the oldest forms of cosmetic products that are still being applied are Kajal, Sindoor, Mehendi etc. Ancient cosmetics were primarily extracts from the plant sources like turmeric (haldi), sandalwood, nuts and yellow and red clay of few regions, ashes (Bhasmas) of different minerals and herbs.
