Both cable and wire are used in almost every form of industry. Right from, SWA cabling, to Conduit include some form of wires and cables. When one or more strands are tied together it is called a cable. Whereas, wire is a single elongated string of drawn metal. Wires, are basically used to carry electrical and telecommunication signals. Wire gauges are the main determinant factors for standard sizes of wires. At times, wires are also to refer bundle of wire strands also known as 'multi-stranded wire.' These wires are usually used in mechanics, or a cable in electricity.
Deepening of mines and construction of ships during the 19th century led to an increased demand for stronger cables. The invention of better steel-making techniques made wires common in mining and other industrial applications. The manufacture of submarine telegraph cables in the middle of 19th century became possible with the help of machines, which were similar to mechanical cables. During this period, electrical cable was mostly insulated using cloth, rubber and paper.
Today, in many antiquity and jewelery, you'll find some or the other form of wire used for decoration. Solid and stranded are the two main types of wires. The common applications for cables are wire rope, bicycle cable, mechanical cable, communications cable and more.
