Granite and Marbles are natural stones, which have got wide usage in construction, architectural as well as sculpture work.
Granite
Granite is widely occurring, intrusive, felsic, igneous rock that has a medium to coarse texture. It can be in pink, gray or even black colors, depending upon the chemistry and mineralogy.
Granite forms a major part of the continental crust and occurs in relatively small stock masses. It is said that the natural stone was present in the earth crust even in Precambrian age. The stone is extensively used as flooring tile in buildings and monuments. Because of its abundance, Granite was earlier used in building foundations of homes in New England. It has been found as a better replacement to marble, because of better durability and resistance to acid rain. Polished granite is also used as kitchen counter top, because of its aesthetic qualities and long lasting life.
Marble
It is a non-foliated metamorphic rock, which is made from the metamorphism of limestone and is used for sculpture as well as in building construction. Marble is available in variety of colors and textures. Some common types include:
- Black marble
- White marble
- Brown marble
- Makrana
- Katni marble
- Red marble
Uses of Marble
- Finely ground marble is a component in paper and is also used in toothpaste, plastics and paints.
- Marble is used in making limestone, chalk and pills also.
- It is used in plastic because of dimensional stabling, stiffness and thermal conductivity.
- Used in paints because of high brightness and weather resistance.
